I know flickr for a long time, I’ve read a lot articles about the photo community. But I never really visited the website nor did I searched for photos. I did this a few days ago, to plan my holidays and decide which country to visit I went to flickr and searched for photos.
I was surprised not only about the amount of photos, more about the high quality of most of them. Currently I read “The Cult of the Amateur” by Andrew Keen and I think he’s not wrong with his critics on user generated content (at least most of the time). But that’s not true for the picures on flickr. Many amateur photographers uploaded an uncountable amount of nice photos about nearly every palce on earth and I spend hours searching around not only watching the amazing images but also reading the profiles of the photographers and some of the comments about some of the pictures.
As far as I could see there’re lots of functions how to group image series or to tag the pictures, e.g. geo tagging (there’s only one picture from my home village). Until now I didn’t get trough them all. Another great thing is the API for requesting images from flickr to include them in your own website or application. That’s what I really interested in. More information about this you can get at http://www.flickr.com/services/ or on http://www.programmableweb.com/.
