Nearly everybody knows the table of applications, Tim O’Reilly used in one of his speeches the show the technical difference between Web 1.0 and Web 2.0. He compared for example a Content Management System (CMS) as an application from the first version of the internet with a wiki, as the one from the second version. I found another useful graph to explain, what Web 2.0 is: it’s from the Whitepaper Distributed Influence: Quantifying the impact of Social Media from Jonny Bentwood.

He used the shown Graph to explain the influence of Web 2.0 on Marketing, but if you include the known tools in this graph you get an usable overview.

The development from the first to the second version of the internet goes from controlled to open communication and from controlled to open collaboration as well. From my point of view, the position of virtual worlds is currently somewhere in between communication and collaboration. They are mainly used for the first one but I believe, that they have the potential as a future tool for collaboration.
